I cannot express just how grateful I am that my friend Adam at RoofBeamReader.com has decided to revive his TBR Pile Challenge. He took a two year hiatus as he was writing his doctoral thesis, and now that he has earned his doctorate and is a professor at a university – Yay Adam! – he feels like he’s in a good place to run this year-long challenge again.
So, in case you need a refresher, here are the basic details: When joining this challenge, you are pledging to read 12 books that have been sitting on your TBR shelf for at least a year. It doesn’t matter the subject, if it is an audio or graphic novel, it just needs to have been on your shelf waiting patiently for you for a year. You have to actually name the 12 books you are going to read before January 15, 2018. I will be naming my list here in this post, but I will update on my 2018 Reading Challenges page. You also get to select 2 alternates, in case one of the choices ends up being a DNF (did not finish).
Normally, I wouldn’t be signing up for a challenge quite this early, but I was able to walk over to my shelf and easily pick out at least 20 books that I really need to get to, but haven’t yet. I narrowed it down to these:
- Sula by Toni Morrison
- The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro
- Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier
- The Man in the High Castle by Philip K. Dick
- Finnikin of the Rock by Marlena Marchetta
- Emmy & Oliver by Robin Benway
- The Crying of Lot 49 by Thomas Pynchon
- In Our Time by Ernest Hemingway
- The Scarlet Pimpernel by Baroness Orczy
- Jackaby by William Ritter
- In Cold Blood by Truman Capote
- The Color of Water by James McBride
The Alternates:
- Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides
- The Soul of an Octopus by Sy Montgomery
If you are interested in joining in the fun – because it is fun, the sense of accomplishment for finally reading these books is fulfilling, and Adam even offers up prizes throughout the year to help keep motivation up – just go to the official sign up post by CLICKING HERE and go for it! You won’t be sorry!
Yay! I’m glad you’re joining. Middlesex is really brilliant and important … hope it finds its way onto your main list. 😉 I also loved Rebecca way more than I expected. It’s one of those I kicked myself for not getting to sooner.

You’ve inspired me to join this challenge. Might that me a few weeks to make my list and post, but I will be participating. I need to work on my huge TBR pile in 2018!

I get weirdly jealous about other peoples lists! Love Rebecca and The Remains of the Day (the film adaptation is superb as well). I have The Man in the High Castle on my list as well. I really want to read In Cold Blood at some point too…not sure when that’s going to happen!

You have some truly great selections on your list. I read ‘Rebecca’ several years ago, and ‘the Remains of the Day’ is a modern classic. ‘The Scarlet Pimpernel’ is a lot of fun. Good luck Sarah with all of this year’s reading endeavors.
