"Bossypants" by Tina Fey

I am not going to beat around the bush here….  This book is hilarious.  It is exactly everything I expected from Tina Fey, whom I consider the funniest woman in America today.  This book is a collection of essays – some autobiographical, some social commentary based in her own life – all of it with Fey’s spin on things.  I cannot name a particular essay that is my “favorite”, but I was surprised at how many I could relate to in a small way (especially those regarding parenting and travelling for the holidays).  It is more than that though, obviously.

When you read a book, do you hear your own voice in your head saying the words?  I usually do (complete with my own terrible accents that I will bestow upon certain characters, sometimes without reason)….  but for this book, I could “hear” Fey’s voice, and picture her mannerisms that have become famous from her work on 30 Rock and Saturday Night Live.  It is also a little fun to get some backstage scoop on life behind the scenes of these two shows.  All in all, this is a fantastically funny book – I highly recommend it.  In fact, I am already loaning it out to someone right now!  If you aren’t sure if this is your style, I recommend going to the bookstore or library and just read the back cover.  I laughed out loud just at that….

  1. I've read several of the excerpts in the New Yorker from this book and they were hilarious. And sometimes also insightful. I thought in reading the excerpts that she seems like the kind of person you can imagine going out for coffee with.
